Unit 10 and 18A History

Awhile back an Arizona Game & Fish officer asked us about our Unit 10 and 18A hunters - he was wondering how many big bucks we had taken in those two units. I prepared a little list for him and emailed it to him. I've been keeping track of the list ever since then and I've posted it below.

We've had quite a bit of luck since we started guiding and have been fortunate to take as many big bucks as we have. So far, in just Unit 10 and 18A we've taken 10 bucks that score over 90-inches out of 30. Our average B&C score has been 86 4/8! If we looked at only what we've done since 2000 the results are even better with an average B&C score of 87 4/8 and an average SCI score of 90 1/8!

If you've drawn one of the coveted Arizona Unit 10 or 18A pronghorn tags this year you may have a chance at a whopper! Good luck.

Hey Eli,

How many points does it take to draw one of the 20% bonus tags for 10 and 18A?

I think this year max bonus points was 19.

Eli,

Whats up with bucks killed in 18a being entered in Coconino county when in looks like all Mohave and Yavapi counties?

I looked through the record books (Arizona and B&C) and I found only two entries that appeared to be incorrect. Why they were incorrect I have no idea. I imagine either the official scorer or the hunter had the misconception of where the county boundaries were.

I'll let B&C know about this so that they can fix it in their future books.

Are there more than two instances that you see or any bucks in particular that you're unsure of? If so I'll check them out.

Thanks for the info.

Eli,

I have 4.
Ken Langford 87 4/8
Lawrence Kochevar 86 4/8
Sam Jaksick 92 6/8
John Grimmett 87
These bucks appear in Arizona records as 18a but b&c as Coconino entries. Robin Bechtel had one listed in B&C at 86 inches Coconino from 18a but it now no longer is listed in B&C, don't know why. Jaksicks and Kochevar 18a came from your blog but are listed in B&C as Coconino. Anyway just curious.

I saw Sam's and Langford's - I must have missed the others when I was scanning.

Methinks you have way too much time on your hands if you were actually cross-referencing both books to look for county/unit discrepancies. LOL!

(that sounds like something that I would do, though, since I have lots of time on my hands! ;)

I have no idea why they're wrong. Same reasons as before, I guess. Either the hunter was mistaken, the scorer was mistaken, or B&C/Arizona was mistaken.

Honestly, if you were to have me take a test and the test was to draw in the county lines on a map I'd have no idea where Coconino or Yavapai county started and stopped.

Good catch, though.

If you're really interested in cross-reference research type stuff you should check out the SCI record book and cross-reference it with the B&C book. I've done it. Lots of weird things you'll see.

Wait! I have a better explanation for you. I just asked my Dad what county 18A was in and he said, "Coconino, I think, why?"

:)

That should explain it. I showed him the map. He said, "Oh...oh, well, no biggie."

Where those particular bucks were taken I believe would have been in Yavapai County.

Eli,

Thanks for your reply. I've looked at burning my 15 points on muzzy 18a and when chasing book bucks you pay attention to details but you know that. Keep up the best units and photos it sure passes the off time.

Eli,

What is PGS's history in 19A

I'll look it up and post it in the next blog.

Hey Eli, Do you have any pics of that 86 5/8 in 18a from last year? I had a tag for the rifle hunt and shot, what I thought was the biggest buck I could find. He had some ground shrinkage. I guessed him at 86, and he was 82 5/8.

My guess is that your buck looks like a bigger buck. This particular buck only scored around 81 B&C. The reason it was bigger for SCI is because it had very high prongs. If I can find a picture of it I'll post it for you.

Any chance you might e-mail some pictures of your buck from 18A? I'd love to see it!
